It was in a pretty poor state, leaking roof, slopping concrete floors, electrics in chaos. There were two large spaces used for storage. The house part was four small rooms and right at the back was a room with an upstairs bit. It had no natural light downstairs and a dark, dank part at the back, ideal for storage. My studio.

I was desperate to get the place, it was the only one I'd seen in two years of looking. My flat was being threatened with repossession so I had put it up for sale. In a week I'd signed a 21 year lease on Acre Road, sold the flat and got notice of repossession. Just in time management again.

I got guys in to build the bones of the infrastructure, electrics, plumbing to every space and a sealed, insulated floor. I did most of the plaster boards and turned the two big spaces into five studios, a year later I then turned two of the slightly larger studios into three, making a final count of six down the corridor, four in the house and me at the back.

When I signed the lease Ainslie Yule and Carol Hodgson had resigned from Sculpture House so basically I was on my own. The way I like it.
